Naval Expeditionary Medal

This was instituted in 1936 and is awarded for landings on
foreign territory and operations against armed opposition for which no
specific campaign medal had been authorised. A "Wake Island" bar has been
authorised for this medal for Navy and Marine Corps personnel who served in
the defence of Wake Island, 7 to 22 December 1941. A silver "W" is worn on the
service ribbon by holders of this bar.
