USCG Distinguished Service Medal

Created in 1961, this recognises exceptionally meritorious service to the US Government in a duty of great responsibility. The medal was originally approved in 1949, but the design was not finalised for another 12 years.

Admiral Alfred C. Richmond, Commandant of the Coast Guard, received the first Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal in 1961.
